FUN ON WATER in
|
SNORKELING
Cancun's bountiful underwater world is easily viewed on one of several tours offered by
the various marinas. A snorkel and a mask are all you need to explore this colorful
landscape, so an underwater experience may be no farther than the shores flanking your
client's hotel. The guided snorkeling tours in Cancun are generally from 1-1/2 to four
hours long, and include a boat excursion to a reef, use of a life jacket, soft drinks and
beer, and one or two meals, depending on length of tour.
SCUBA DIVING
Anyone who knows diving knows that diving in Cancun is sublime. Whether your clients are
adventurous spirits with no diving experience or certified divers looking for a new
Underwater thrill, Cancun has enough of a variety to please everyone. A one-tank dive
costs around US$45, a two-tank dive, around US$55-$60. Many of the dive shops also offer a
four-hour resort course for around US$70. To become certified in Cancun takes from four to
five days and costs about US$350. The average dive in Cancun is around 35 feet, but
open-water dives can go as deep as 50 to 60 feet. Drift diving is the norm here, and the
big attractions are the coral reefs, near which it is possible to see hundreds of fish.
DEEP-SEA FISHING
Marinas offer private and group charters for four,, six- or eight-hour trips, and usually
include equipment, bait, licenses, lunch and all the beer and soft drinks you can handle.
From February to April, fishermen can expect king fish, barracuda, small shark, grouper
and blue marlin. From September to February: barracuda, grouper, snapper, mackerel and
arnberjack. From April to August: blue marlin, sail fish, tuna, bonito and mahi-mahi.
JUNGLE TOURS
Many of the marinas in Cancun are now offering an eco-adventure through the Nichupte
Lagoon they have dubbed the jungle tour. Manning your own two-person vehicles, you may
take a guided tour through the dense ma1lgrove forest to a section of one of the largest
coral reefs in the world. Here you can snorkel, sunbathe and relax before returning to the
marina. The jungle tour is about US$35.
OTHER ROUTES TO THE REEF
In addition to the jungle tour, AquaWorld, Cancun's biggest marina, offers what they call
the Paradise Island Adventure, different from the former only in that you are taken on a
boat out to the reef, where you can spend a few hours or a whole day on a tiny island,
with lunch, soft drinks and alcoholic beverages at your disposal. Boats return every hour
to the marina.Other excursions to the reefs are in glass-bottom boats, where the fish and
coral can be eyed without ever getting wet. Jet skis and waverunners can be rented at most
marinas for self-guided excursions on the lagoon. Waterskiing is also popular on the
lagoon, and can cost as little as US$1 per minute. Several marinas will provide boats for
private charter that can accommodate anywhere from two to 200 passengers.
PARASAILNG
Sailing high above the aquamarine seas with a birds eye view of Cancun is a
thrilling adventure and very popular activity at Cancuns beaches. The sailor is
strapped into a vest attached to a colorful parachute and pulled by a speedboat high above
the water. Some marinas have two-seaters, for an extra boost of moral support!
SUBMARINE TRIPS
Yet another kind of underwater adventure Cancun can provide is one where you never have to
get wet. Semi-submarines and submarines have below-deck compartments for viewing marine
life, plus narration to make sure you know what you are seeing. AquaWorlds
"SubSee Explorer" is docked at their man-made island, and is part of their
Paradise Island Adventure (US$45). Atlantis Submarine is the real thing - a fully immersed
sub - that takes 48 passengers on a 45-minute tour.
WET N WILD
Cancuns own super water park, complete with wave pool and a chance to frolic with
the dolphins. Admission for adults is US$25, kids 3-9 US$19 and kids under 3 get in for
free. The park is open daily from 10am to 7pm (from September to December, the doors close
at 6pm).
